Tips for Birth Mothers When Talking to Your Family about Adoption

Birth Mothers Family Adoption

It’s sometimes difficult for birth mothers to reveal their plans for adoption plans to their families.

Deciding to put a child up for adoption can be a wonderful gift, but an incredibly difficult decision for birth mothers to make. So, it is nice to have the support of your family members. A strong support system can make this difficult time a little easier. But talking to your family about adoption, even just initiating the conversation, is not always easy. In fact, it can be incredibly stressful.

How to Talk to Your Family about Adoption

It’s sometimes difficult for birth mothers to reveal their plans for adoption plans to their families. What happens if your family doesn’t agree with your decision? How can you more easily break the news to your parents?

Prepare for the Talk

It is important to remember that you are not alone, even before you tell your friends and family members about your decision. Adoption Makes Family, a non-profit (501-C3), licensed adoption agency based in Maryland, operates a 24/7 pregnancy hotline to help you in your time of need. Our caring and compassionate counselors provide a confidential, safe, and non-judgmental environment in which to explore your thoughts, feelings, and options. We can also help you prepare to speak with your family about adoption.

Remember That This Adoption Affects Them Too

While you may have already come to grips with your decision, it is important to remember that your family members also have many thoughts and emotions regarding the situation. They too need time to prepare, so it is important to be open and honest with those closest to you.

Have Them Speak to an Adoption Counselor

If your parents or another family member is having a hard time coping with your decision, bring them along the next time you visit the adoption agency. You can even set up an individual appointment with an adoption counselor for them.

At Adoption Makes Family, your parents and other concerned family members can speak directly to an adoption counselor, who will listen to their concerns and questions and respond in a caring and compassionate manner.

Remember, you are not alone. Adoption Makes Family is here to help!

We are here to help birth mothers as they consider what option will be the best for them and their baby.
